  Reduce Tuition Fees

How can I afford university?

I'm $25,000 in debt, can I afford to graduate?

Can I afford to help with my daughter's tuition fees?

The governments of British Columbia and Canada are responsible for ensuring that every qualified person is able to access and afford a college or university education.

Provincial and federal funding for post-secondary education has declined, and that has resulted in higher tuition fees for students. In 2001, the province funded about 70% of the cost of a students’ education; that number is now as low as 53% at some universities. The difference has been made up in the higher tuition fees students are paying today.

Students also saw massive cuts to federal funding for post-secondary education funding in the 1990s. While some of that funding has been restored, it would take nearly $4 billion annually in additional funding to return to 1992-1993 levels.

By working together, the federal and provincial government can better invest in students by providing affordable education, and reducing tuition fees.

Members of the Canadian Federation of Students across BC and throughout Canada are participating in the campaign to reduce tuition fees. Students will be working together this year to:

-ensure the BC government legislates a multi-year tuition fee reduction beginning in fall 2006;
-ensure that all money transferred to the provinces from the recent Federal budget goes directly to reducing tuition fees; and
-ensure that the federal government restores $4 billion in post-secondary education funding.
